I'm often asked what I miss most as an expat.
This is my first summer in the UK
and it lived up to its reputation: grey, rainy and chilly.
At first I thought it wasn't going to last,
that's it was just a phase.
Alas, grey skies are here to stay.

Fortunately, in a month the Toddler, Mr K. and I
will be soaking in the Aegean while drinking ouzo
(the Toddler will stick to juice, I think).
Till then, I'm warming up by looking forward to...
White sand, Schinoussa island |
Reading a book
under the sandtree's merciful shadow
(meanwhile the Toddler is being spoiled
by his grandmother).
(meanwhile the Toddler is being spoiled
by his grandmother).
Pebbles, Livada beach, Tinos island |
Diving for shells
and encountering sea creatures.
Taverna by the sea, Serifos island |
Eating tomatoes, small fish and fries
with my feet in the sand
(meanwhile the Toddler is still being spoiled
by his -tired- grandmother).
(meanwhile the Toddler is still being spoiled
by his -tired- grandmother).
Methoni fortress, Messinia |
Exploring history
in fortresses and ancient castles.
Watching old men play tavli
and kids football
while eating a generous piece of baklava.
Going for a late afternoon swim.
Tonifying & detoxifying.
(meanwhilethe Toddler is being put to sleep
by his -exhausted- grandmother).
Watching the sun hide
behind an arid mountain.
Knowing it will be back tomorrow...

Ah, this has made me long for our greek summer holiday. There really is no more beautiful a place :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm counting days too...
DeleteIt's very beautiful, indeed.
I was only saying last week how we haven't been to Greece for over a year and I'm so missing it, this hasn't helped at all! Lovely post.
ReplyDeleteThank you, and so sorry for the {painful} reminder :)
DeleteOk, this is really making me miss Greece. I'm a Swedish expat in the UK, but spent most of my summers as a teen in Greece (Crete/ Leros/ Peloponnesus) since my parents had a house there *sigh*
ReplyDeleteHi, Carin! Crete and the Peloponnese are beautiful.
DeleteNever been to Leros, but heard it's unique.
God you made me miss the Mediterranean summer. Now I long for sun and baklave...
ReplyDeleteAnd of course it just started raining here.
I am going to find some chocolate for comfort eating
:)
The only plus of British summer is that chocolate has less calories than baklava! Hi, Orli :)
DeleteOh, I am missing Greece as well, especially since I recently returned from a quick Santorini vacation, now i am just craving more sun and seaside! =)

Lucky you, Santorini is one of the most beautiful places in the whole world!
DeleteWe are on Santirini right now. Just hikes from Fira to Oia and it was delicious!
ReplyDeleteBreathtaking view, isn'it? Don't forget to visit Akrotiri's ancient city, it's like an Indiana Jones filmset :)
